3 out of 5 stars Ok for your first few months   August 21, 2010
Joshua Taylor
It's just ok for your first few months. Beyond that you'll be extremely disappointed. My number one issue with this set is in its design. You are forced into this really odd layout with the snare being off to the side and the floor tom just not being in a natural position that acoustic drummers would be used to. Thanks to its compressed and odd layout (although not necessarily odd for compact sets, as I've seen plenty others with a similar layout), it's really hard to keep a hi-hat rhythm going and play and accent on the snare. The second biggest issue is the ride cymbal. Unless you barely tap it, it produces a sound as if you were hitting the bell of the ride. Which brings up another point: the sensitivity of these pads isn't the greatest. I won't harp too much on this point as it is a $500 set. Just don't buy this think you can do any intricate snare work because you can't on this.

Lastly, the voices are LAME. Absolutely awful sounds. The best you can possibly do is make something that sounds like an _OK_ MIDI synthesizer. It advertises having a bunch of different sets, but in reality there are only like 4 or 5 real _drum_ kits available, the rest are some weird electronic sounds and record scratch sounds and a bunch of nonsense. I can understand if you have an acoustic set and you have a single electronic pad for weird sounds like that, but to have your entire set consist of it is idiotic. The only reason this isn't the number one issue with this drumset is because it offers the USB -> PC connection which you can use to have your PC render the voices. Works alright.

4 out of 5 stars Great kit for the price!   August 19, 2010
Travis D. Polin
After a long haitus from drum playing I decided it was time to jump back into it. Living in an apartment really limits my options so I started to research different electronic kits. I've always played acoustic in the past so I wanted to make sure that whatever I got was something I could be happy playing. All the reviews on the Alesis DM6 were mostly positive and the price seemed very reasonable. I had actually narrowed my selection down to this model and the DM5 Pro. The clincher was playing the DM6 at my local Guitar Center. It had a great feel and I really liked the sound. Amazon was offering the kit at a better price so I went that route and couldn't be happier with my purchase. After a couple of weeks I'm having a lot of fun getting back into the groove of playing. It's really a great kit for the price. I have no complaints and highly recommend this set to anyone wanting something to play at home.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive for the price   August 7, 2010

I used to play on an acoustic set, however, I'm living in an appt now, so I got an electric set to keep the noise down. My experience with electric drums is basically limited to trying out a few in the store. I would highly recommend that you try out a few sets before you buy. Overall, I was very impressed by these. The best thing I can say about them is that when I'm playing it sometimes feels like I'm playing an acoustic set.

Good things:
-Sample quality is great- the sound is very realistic.
-Handy metronome.
-Hardy build quality.
-Great quality-for-the-price.
-Easy assembly.
-Real bass drum hammer.
-Surprisingly good high hat- although the pedal isn't connected to the cymbal, it feels connected (you can splash it and everything).
-Decent software configuration options (for example, you can change the snare pad to a piccolo snare pad).

Bad things:
-Rim shots on the snare pad don't really work correctly. They trigger when you hit the plastic casing for the snare, not the raised rubber edge of the pad.
-The ride cymbal has an odd "feature" where when you hit it hard, it sounds like your playing on the bell, and will only sound normal when you hit it softly. I can't find a way to make it stop doing this. Although if you pay attention, it's pretty easy to control.
-You can't do rim clicks (unless you change the sample that the snare pad makes to the click sample, but then it will activate even when you strike the center of the pad).
-Crash cymbal doesn't sound right if you hit it softly.
-Snare drum sounds the same all over. It should sound quieter and more echo-y towards the sides. Although this is probably asking too much for such a cheap electric set.
-The triggers on the cymbals generally only trigger at a minimum impact, so its very hard to hit them very softly.

Also, I've heard some rumblings about a firmware update. However, I haven't tried loading it, so I can't attest to it solving any of these problems.

4 out of 5 stars very good starter set   June 9, 2010

I am a beginner and wanted a set that I can learn on, but would also allow me to experiment with other percussion instruments besides a rock drum set and would take a small amount of room and allow low volume levels. I've had this set for about a month and a half. So far, it is working well for me. The rubber drum and cymbal surfaces are great for keeping the volume low enough when playing late at night. Each drum and cymbal seem to have sweet spots where I imaging the triggers are. Depending on the devise, hitting further from this sweet spot might change the sound and/or volume produced. The impression I get is that most electronic drum sets have some kind of problem or another, so it seems to be whether the problem(s) are something you can live with or not. Also, you can't play with the same nuance and control as an acoustic set, but for the price it goes a long way to making it seem real enough that I can enjoy it and feel like I'm learning the drums. It takes up very little space compared to an acoustic set which is great for me since I have little room for it. There are a few problems that I'm not likely to encounter until I become really accomplished. One is that when playing the snare rim shot and either the hi-hat or tom 1 simultaneously, one or the other will not trigger a sound to occur about half the time. I found this out when playing these combinations rapidly, which I'm not likely to do maybe ever. But it is still an error in functionality. I called Alesis and they said this was a common characteristic of this model drum set. There is a firmware update that has been mentioned in earlier reviews that I, but it didn't make any difference. In summary, for the price and my needs, I am very pleased with this drum set. More expensive sets with more sounds and better nuance control don't have the rubber surfaces that I want, plus, according to reviews they all seem to have problems of some type so spending more money doesn't necessarily eliminate problems.

3 out of 5 stars Drum roll please?   April 27, 2010

pretty good for someone starting out. though the soft pads make drum rolls a little difficult. Also the snare drum sounds are pretty bad I would say. And the rimshots are not what you'd expect. you don't hit the edge of the pad, you hit the plastic sides, so it's completely different feel from actual rimshots.
Cymbals are a little weak. they don't respond to light hits, so you often end up with no sound or a sound much louder than you wanted.

It's great for learning, and basic practice, but I wish I had have waited a few more months and bought the DM10 instead.
