Amazon.com Review
Books on outdoor grilling abound, but few get the job done as concisely as Weber's Charcoal Grilling. Addressed, as most such books are, to the male cook, this collection of 115 attractive recipes, which range from rubs and sauces to desserts--and includes, besides the basics, the tasty likes of Filet Mignon Steaks with Martini Marinade; Dutch Oven Jambalaya; and Caribbean-Spiced Grouper with Yellow Pepper Sauce--necessarily concentrates on technique. A comprehensive, color-photo-illustrated section on fire-mastery helps guide readers through fundamentals and more advanced approaches like outdoor smoking. Included also are portraits of successful guy-grillers, which should provide further encouragement to the grilling-diffident. With good notes on shopping and grilling pitfalls--how to avoid fish sticking to the grill is one--this is an excellent, to-the-point guide. --Arthur Boehm

4 out of 5 stars Very good; almost great   July 12, 2010

The books is very high quality; i.e. good paper, great color photos, and lots of contributions from a variety of folks.

I like how the book gives multiple recipes for basically the same item, so it's easier to find a method that works best for me.

The only real gripe I have is that it is more like a recipe book, than a primer for learning the "art of cooking with live fire". Meaning, that I don't think it gave much advice for fire control, smoke, etc. It would have been very helpful to know why one recipe would call for smoking ribs at 300 degrees for 3 hours, while another would call for 250 degrees or 225... and what different result each would bring.

All in all, I think that it does a very good job as a cook book, but a so so job as a BBQ primer. If you're looking for tips on actual BBQ techniques, I think that internet forums are the best places to go.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Put "Awesome Book"   July 10, 2010

Wow finally a book that covers charcoal grilling and charcoal grilling ONLY. No gas garbage here. From start to finish a great book to begin your charcoal grilling experience. Plenty of great recipes for beginners and veterans alike. Well rounded and easy to read and follow. Very interesting read covering quite a bit of material. Simply put "I am oh so glad I bought this book!".

5 out of 5 stars This is a "real man's" cookboom   May 15, 2010

There would be few if any dishes in this compendium of gastronomiq delight that any man (or woman) wouldn't enjoy. I have now cooked several dishes from here, both on the grill and on the stove (SACRILIDGE!) and they all come out just great. The tomatillo sauce used in a few of the recipies is a huge hit with everyone who tries it, and the jambalaya i did last night (with a substitution of chorizo for one of the sausages) was a spicy delight that rivals easily what I have eaten in some pretty good restaurants. Whenever I want to cook, which with this economy seems more and more often, THIS is the first book I turn to!

If you're a guy, you need this. If you need a gift for a guy, this would be a great cookbook. And if you're a woman, well.... just sit back and watch the guy do all the work and treat you!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source for the Rookie Griller   April 6, 2010

When I first started using a charcoal grill, I had no clue what I was doing. Fortunately, this was the first book I purchased concerning the subject. Not only does the author instruct how to build a three zone fire and other necessary information towards successful meals, but he shares some inspiring stories about others who have had success grilling and smoking foods. The book is full of colorful and well thought-out photos that truly instruct. My only 2 gripes about the book are:

1. once you press it down to open a page, the pages start to fall out. (I would rather pay another $10 and get a hardcover.)

2. Considering Weber has produced the book and also manufacturers one of the most successful smokers, (the WSM: Weber Smokey Mountain), the smoke section in the book is too brief. Its a teaser really so they should have just left it out or truly given smoking food the space it deserves.

The author also has some great videos on [...] which clarifies a lot.
